A Participatory and Multi-Scale Diagnosis for Developing a Soil Conservation Strategy for Eastern Bhutan

چکیده
Land degradation by soil erosion and landslides has been recognised as a constraint for sustainable land-use in Eastern Bhutan for a few decades. However, the extreme diversity in agro-ecological zones, the relative inaccessibility of the region, the lack of reliable data and the limited research capacity made it very difficult to develop a relevant land management strategy. To address this issue, a simple diagnostic multi-scale survey was developed which integrated knowledge of land-users, extension agents and researchers. In the course of 1 year, a preliminary picture of land degradation in Eastern Bhutan emerged, including major causes, geographical differentiation and trends in land degradation. These insights enabled to formulate general guidelines for a soil conservation strategy. An important additional output was that extension services increased their awareness and knowledge about land degradation, which will enable to make future soil conservation programs more effective.

Soil conservation is the only known way to protect the productive land. In country like Ethiopia, where droughts and floods cause food scarcity problem, soil and water conservation not only increases crop yield, but also prevents further deterioration of land. Soil and water conservation preserve soil moisture and drain water sustainably to avoid soil erosion and depletion of soil nutrients. So...

A project of the CGIAR systemwide program on Soil, Water and Nutrient Management (SWNM), concerned with improving integrated nutrient management practices on small-scale farms in Africa, has been carried out in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda for last two years (September 1999 to September 2001). The project aims to enable small-scale farmers to profitably reverse nutrient depletion of their soils b...

Extended Abstract 1- Introduction Today, geotourism phenomena and geological heritage are at risk of being destroyed by the changing lifestyles and industrialization of most countries. These changes are based on high rates of resource consumption, such as energy, materials, soil, as well as increased production of tailings and waste (Gray, 2004). In recent years, as the number of tourist’s in...

Reducing the amount and intensity of surface runoff, thus reducing erosion is one of the important aspects of natural resource management, watershed management and soil conservation. Land surface conditions and particularly vegetation is Mitigating or aggravating factor in erosion. Studies on the effect of ground cover to reduce erosion rates indicate that is not necessary to ground cover to re...
